📸 Weekly Challenge
Week 8 - Monochrome / Black & White
Hello @everyone! This is one of those themes that's easy to do, but hard to master. Monochrome / Black & White photography removes the distraction of colour and allows light, shadow, texture, and composition to take centre stage. It’s about simplicity, contrast, and mood. Without colour, the strength of your image relies entirely on form and feeling.
Ideas & inspiration:
- 🏙️ Street scenes with strong shadows and contrast.
- 🧑 Portraits that emphasise expression and character.
- 🌫️ Misty landscapes or dramatic skies.
- 🏛️ Architecture, patterns, and repeating shapes.
- 🌳 Trees, branches, and natural textures.
Photography tips:
- Look for contrast. Strong light and shadow often work beautifully.
- Focus on texture and shape. They become more powerful in monochrome.
- Keep compositions clean and intentional.
- Try converting in post-processing rather than shooting only in black and white. This gives you more control over tones.
- Don’t be afraid of deep blacks. Monochrome can handle bold contrast.
Monochrome has a timeless quality. It can make modern scenes feel classic and ordinary moments feel dramatic. Strip it back. Let the light do the talking.
